AutoCAD 25
Autodesk is celebrating 25 Years of Design Innovation and has an interesting timeline at www.autodesk.com/autocad25. According to the timeline, "1982: John Walker and 16 employees start Autodesk with the goal of creating a CAD application for under $1,000."
25 years on, I guess they are still trying to do the same thing. It's a good thing that $1,000 is not as much as it used to be back then.

25 years ago, John Walker and 15 friends (all equal partners) had a hardware company called Marinchip Systems (the name is a pun) making a failed personal computer, because the early days of personal computers was all about the hardware.
The market began shifting to software, and so they threw together a bunch of software packages, including the not-so-famous "Autodesk" -- an early attempt at office productivity software. Completely by accident, they found the only package to generate excitement was MicroCAD, contributed to the group effort by Mike Riddle. When it went on sale under the name of AutoCAD, it was priced at precisely $1000.
