PTC Is For Sale

Financial Times is reporting that PTC has hired Goldman Sachs to sell itself for $2 billion. Makes me wonder. Are we going to see the entry of another giant like Siemens? Or will one of the major CAD vendors put on extra weight?

  • I contacted PTC for comment, but got no response (other than the standard "we can't comment on it"). Perhaps I shouldn't doubt Financial Times, but the fact that the reporter describes the source vaguely as "people with knowledge of the process" doesn't sit very well with me. And so far, all the stories I can find are those citing the Financial Times piece, none that independently confirms it.

  • Kenneth,

If it were false, they would most probably have used phrases like "totally baseless", "just rumours" or "completely untrue". The "cannot comment" phrase is used more often when something is cooking.

    Anyways, time will tell.

  • I wonder what is going on in Dassault towers or Autodesk mansions right now?

Is it a case of "we have to buy it"? I'm not convinced Autodesk would want it given that their spread of applications is so wide and adding another two MCAD solutions (not to mention PLM) would confuse the sales message around Inventor. But then Autodesk do have a history with PTC.

Dassault might be a more likely buyer as they already operate in the same markets and with some of their customer base using Windchill it would make some sense to tie up the aerospace and automotive markets nicely.

    Interesting times ahead!

  • The problem with Dassault buying PTC is that they have lost a lot of credibility with the Enovia LCA fiasco. I am not sure if they buy PTC it would help them. I would venture to guess that Oracle, Siemens, and perhaps SAP would show interest. $2 billion is a lot of coin in this economy. That is why I say the bigger companies would be better suited for an acquisition. Just my thoughts.

  • SpaceClaim looks more and more like a bargain everyday. No sales but great technology.

  • Yeah, the source for this "story" is that single FT article. One wonders who spoke to them in the first place?
