Bricscad for Linux
Ever since word got out that Bricsys was developing a version of Bricscad for Linux, people have been bombarding Bricsys with questions regarding it. Luc de Batseiler, CTO of Bricsys, told me, "Every week we get at least 3 to 5 inquiries for a Linux version." CEO Erik de Keyser added, "People are even offering to pay in advance for it in order to help us fund the development. It's unbelievable. Money is the least of our problems. Time is."
Now that the rewrite of the Bricscad platform is almost over, Bricsys is free to concentrate on other things, and one of things on their plate is the Linux version of Bricscad. Luc tells me that they intend to release a beta this year. "This is new to us as well, and we do not want to come up with a half baked solution", he said.
Bricsys has also planned a version of Bricscad for the Mac - native support, not some solution using VMWare or Parallels. There has been some noise from Autodesk on this front as well. It will be interesting to see which company gets there first, Bricsys or Autodesk. Lets see who follows whom.

My money is on Bricsys!
A few years ago I tested different Intellicad programs at work, the idea was evidently to replace AutoCAD. At that time, I found them unstable and slow. Out of personal curiosity, I continued to try demos at home. IMHO Bricscad has shown the most improvement in stability and speed. It started to show with V8.
For the past 2 years I've been running Ubuntu Linux on my home PC, and have been looking at the Linux CAD field as well. Not many programs there run natively, and most Win apps didn't run well in wine.
That's why I was pleasantly surprised last week when I tried the latest Bricscad V9.2 demo in Ubuntu 8.10 with wine 1.1.20. All the cosmetic glitches are gone, the app seems to finally be usable (thanks to improvements in Wine). But performance gets a hit for drawings as small as 750KB. Still, I believe it bodes well for the native Linux Bricscad.
If Bricsys opens the beta to the general public, I'm willing to give it a shot!

Same as Normand: I've tried the Win version on Ubutu under Wine as was impressed... and look forward to a native Linux version.

A linux version of Brics CAD V10 is being developed by Bricsys, which is hopefully the answer for switching a design office to Linux completely!
